Orono – A conference focusing on the problems plaguing Maine’s forest industry was held at the University of Maine in Orono, Tuesday.

Industry workers, UMaine professors and others came together to talk about how to improve the industry.

One of the issues they honed in on was a lack of unity between those working in forestry, such as landowners, land managers, and the mills.

It’s a problem that one speaker, Jeffrey Benjamin, said is simple to solve.

“Be communicative to the loggers in terms of resource needs that they have. Maybe there is a way to strengthen and lengthen their contracts with them to facilitate specialized equipment purchases, or something of that nature,” said Benjamin, an Associate Professor of Forest Operations at the university.

The goal of the conference is to help make Maine’s forest industry more competitive in a global market.
