Medway Middle School girls visit TRC and learn about forest bioproducts

As one of the schools participating in the Sustainable Energy Leaders of the Future (SELF) project funded by the Engineering Information Foundation, 15 Eighth grade girls and two teachers from Medway Middle School, Machais visited Technology Research Center (TRC)  in Old Town and UMaine campus.

They spent a day learning about the use of Maine forest in developing advanced materials, chemicals, and fuels in an economically and ecologically sustainable manner. In addition to the tour of the lab Amy Luce, director of TRC and Elisha Cram worked on hands on kits with teams of girls on exploring different renewable energy resources. They also toured the Advanced Structures and Wood Composite Center where Dr. Mehdi Tajvidi and Justin Crouse demonstrated different ways of testing of strength of wood and wood composites.    Students also had fun learning about about physics of wood  and value of engineering education.
